Mohamed Ezzat received his BSc in Physics from Mansoura University, Egypt, in 2015. In the same year, he has appointed as a teaching assistant in Physics Department, Mansoura University. Then, in 2016, he got an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue the European MSc of Nuclear Fusion and Engineering Physics jointly in Stuttgart University (Germany), Carlos III Madrid University (Spain), CIMAT (Spain), and Ghent University (Belgium). He obtained his MSc in 2018 to join the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids Group at ETH-Zurich to pursue his doctoral studies in Plasma Pulse GeoDrilling.
Mohamed Ezzat's current research focus is to understand the fundamental physics of the electric breakdown of heterogeneous solids (i.e., rock). He utilizes the plasma formation modeling in rock pores of a few tens of micrometers sizes under electric pulses of short duration (i.e., few microseconds) and high amplitude (i.e., 200-500 kV). Such research point has several applications, which includes the Plasma Pulse GeoDrilling and high voltage pulse insulators.
Free-CO2 energy sources, such as geothermal energy and nuclear fusion, are the motivation of his research. Therefore, his research on the Plasma Pulse GeoDrilling may lead to the accessibility of the cheap and ultimate deep geothermal energy (5-10 km).
